Ruth Wood (Jane Wyman) is a lonely secretary taking care of her ailing, depressed mother (Josephine Hutchinson) in New York City during World War II. While she's walking in Central Park, a surprise rainstorm leads to her meeting Arthur Hugenon (Van Johnson), a young soldier from Tennessee. The two strike up a whirlwind romance, but Arthur is sent overseas and killed. Distraught and inconsolable, Ruth looks for guidance and, on the brink of giving up, experiences a miracle that changes her life.
