SN 14 | EP 1 | Grave Diagnosis

Dr. Britt Durham was expecting his young patient, a teenage girl impaled on an iron fence, to be dead on arrival at the ER. But what he and his team are faced with when she arrives is like nothing any of them have seen before. The girl is conscious, but the fence stakes have penetrated her neck all the way through, miraculously missing her spine and major blood vessels. The paramedics have sawed off the fence, leaving it in place. Dr. Durham must find a way to stabilize the patient, without making her injuries even worse. The girl's bickering, divorced parents just add to the tension in the ER, and things go from bad to worse when the girl's asthma flares up. Dr. Durham must figure out a way to intubate her without straightening her neck, and now he's faced with an impossible decision do nothing and the girl dies, do something and run the risk of killing her himself. Having recently been trained in an unconventional intubation method using a bronchoscope, Dr. Durham decides this is his only option. The technique was developed to treat patients with severe arthritis, whose neck can't bend, and it's an ideal solution here only Dr. Durham has never actually performed it on a real patient. Everyone's eyes are now on him as he begins the procedure that will either save, or end this young patient's life. Nurse Maricar Cabral-Osorio has experienced her fair share of horrific situations in the ER, but that doesn't mean she can't get spooked, and the hospital has never felt stranger than when an eerie young couple arrive in the ER. As Maricar attempts to assess the pale young man's painful condition, his girlfriend confides that she knows exactly what's wrong with him: he's turning into a vampire! Maricar believes in science and medicine, not the supernatural, but she can't dismiss what she's seeing with her own eyes, and the more she tries to figure out what's wrong with this patient, the more nightmarish the situation gets. Dr. Murdoc Khaleghi is in his first year as an attending physician when a pregnant, critically ill patient arrives suffering a full-blown seizure. This emergency calls for several of the hospital's senior specialists to be called in, but it's soon obvious they are deadlocked about a treatment plan. Each one believes that his or her specialty is the most critical part of the plan, and no one is listening to anyone else. The clock is ticking and time is running out for Dr. Khaleghi's patient and her unborn baby. Can this young physician get this group of seasoned specialists to listen to him, before they all run out of time?
